What to avoid when you're thrifting

There are a few things that I would look out for while shopping. Avoiding these things will make your life a little easier

1. Wash instructions (no dry clean only)

This is so hard for me! I always forget to check the wash instructions until I get home and take the tags off. It will make your life a little easier if you check that first and then you can decide if it is worth it to you. I will say that some “hand wash only” items have done just fine in the washer.

2. Stains

It’s so frustrating when you find the perfect item and there’s a stain right in the middle. It can be tempting to assume that it will wash out, but honestly, it probably won’t. I really avoid things with stains.

3. Holes

Holes are hard to fix. There are some repairs that are worth doing but buying something that has holes in it is not one of those things

4. Movies

I’m not saying you can’t buy movies from DI, but there is always a risk that it will have scratches.

5. Clothing that has pills

Pills on clothes are just annoying all around. They make the item less comfortable and it looks bad. It is also a sign of cheap material.

6. electronics

I usually steer clear of electronics. It is hard to tell why they were donated. Did the owner just not want them or are they broken beyond repair?

Tip:

If you do buy something and then find a hole in it, don't give up! There are ways to hide or repair holes.

Here’s how to repair a hole:

  1. Get some thread that matches the fabric and a needle

  2. Start from the inside and gradually make stitched that go from one side of the hole to the other to seal it up

  3. Try your best to hide stitches but don't get discouraged if you can't

  4. Here is a link to a YouTube video that explains it well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2B_fgEGMlM
